Here is a historical perspective on this BMW. Early 2000’s, BMW’s M series needed a marketing splash to compete with Mercedes AMG’s. They took their Formula One engine (Renault chassis) from 2003-2004 and made it street legal in the M6. It started out in the Formula car as an atmospheric 3.0 liter aluminum V-10, 950 hp spinning to an ungodly 20,000 rpm. In the M6 they increased the engine size to 5.0, still an aluminum V-10, aluminum heads, aluminum pistons, 12:1 compression, 10 individual throttle bodies, spun it to 8700 rpm, atmospheric 507 hp from the factory. The first year introduced 2007 and in 2008 it won International Engine of the Year.
In this car, the engine has been chipped, with a really aggressive custom exhaust system, which on paper it is around 625 hp. Although a screamer and sounds exactly like a modern Formula One engine, it became too expensive for BMW to continue. Thus the only years available was 2007-2010. They replaced it with a low tech 4.6 with twin turbos for 560 factory hp. I bought the car for the engine and the last year made in 2010.

Of note and not to be avoided, the car was issued with a lemon title from the dealer when first owner returned it brand new. The convertible top when operated would at times pause in mid-cycle to stow or open. A mini Micro-switch is believed to be the culprit. My BMW dealer never could duplicate the problem when I had the car checked out. From the owner’s experience owning the car since fall 2016, it has happened twice.
Simply recycling the top in the opposite direction wakes up the micro-switch, normal operation will be restored.
