Description

These smaller baskets were referred to as “sweetmeat” baskets and were used for serving small candies or pastries, i.e. anything sweet.
This small basket is in very nice condition. It was made
by London silversmith William Plummer in 1756. Plummer was known for his work in pierced silver designs, something which clearly shows here. Condition-wise, there are no breaks in the lovely pierced design, and there is no wobble in the base. There is an image of a horse engraved in the base of the bowl, likely a crest of some sort.
This basket measures about 4 3/4″ tall with the handle, 1 7/8″ tall without, 4 3/4″ wide, and 5 3/4″ long. It weighs 178 grams of sterling silver.
